A Description of New Netherland by Adrien vander Donk
Written in 1650, while in Amsterdam trying to convince the States General to remove control of the colony from the Dutch West India Company, it is the most complete qnd detailed first hand account of life in that new land. Vander Donk and Pieter Claessen (Wyckoff) lived in the territory surrounding present day Albany at the same time, and vander Donk's narrative gives us the best possible understanding of what Pieter's life would have been like there. An important and fascinating histoprocal record, this newest translation is easy and fun to read. Context is given to its place in 17th century history by a Forward written by Russell Shorto.
